SPF Is Not Optional: Sun Protection and Your Aesthetic Treatments
South Africa has one of the highest UV indices in the world. If you're investing in aesthetic treatments and not wearing sunscreen every day, you are — quite simply — working against yourself.
South Africa has one of the highest UV indices in the world. If you're investing in aesthetic treatments and not wearing sunscreen every day, you are — quite simply — working against yourself.
We say this not to lecture, but because we genuinely care about your results. Sunscreen is not a nice-to-have addition to your skincare routine. When you've had professional treatments, it is the single most important thing you can do to protect and prolong your investment.
Why UV Exposure Is the Enemy of Aesthetic Results
UV radiation is the leading cause of premature skin ageing — responsible for the majority of wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity that we treat every day. It also directly undermines the results of specific treatments:
– After laser treatments, skin is more photosensitive. UV exposure before full healing can cause hyperpigmentation that is far harder to treat than the original concern.
– Vitamin A (retinol/tretinoin) and other active ingredients prescribed as part of your treatment plan make skin more vulnerable to UV damage if not properly protected.
– Chemical peels and microneedling leave the skin's surface temporarily more susceptible to environmental damage — including UV-induced inflammation.
What SPF to Use
In South Africa, we recommend a minimum of SPF 50, broad-spectrum (protecting against both UVA and UVB). Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, after moisturiser and before makeup. Reapply every two hours if you're spending time outdoors.
Formulation matters. A sunscreen you will actually wear consistently is better than the theoretically superior product sitting unused in your drawer. Find one with a texture you love — there are beautiful options today that leave no white cast and feel weightless on the skin.
The Non-Negotiable Truth
Every treatment we perform at Cleanse Aesthetics represents an investment in your skin's health and appearance. UV protection is what safeguards that investment. Think of it this way: you wouldn't renovate your home and then leave the windows open in a storm. Protect what you've built.
If you're unsure which SPF is right for your skin type or treatment plan, ask us at your next appointment. It's one of the most important conversations we can have.
