Laser Hair Removal: Why You're Not Getting the Results You Want
Laser hair removal is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in the world — and yet it's also one of the most misunderstood. Many clients come to us frustrated: they've completed multiple sessions, spent significant money, and still aren't seeing the smooth, lasting results they were promised.
Reason 1: The Wrong Technology for Your Skin Type
Not all lasers are equal, and not all lasers are right for all skin types. Many clinics use a one-size-fits-all approach with technology that isn't optimised for darker skin tones — which are common in South Africa. Using the wrong wavelength on melanin-rich skin not only delivers poor hair removal results but also increases the risk of burns and hyperpigmentation. At Cleanse Aesthetics, we use technology specifically suited to your skin type, assessed at consultation.
Reason 2: Inconsistent Session Intervals
Laser hair removal works by targeting hair follicles in the active (anagen) growth phase. At any given time, only a portion of your hairs are in this phase. This is why a full course of treatments — typically six to eight sessions — is necessary, spaced four to six weeks apart.
When clients miss sessions, extend the gap too long, or stop partway through a course, they allow follicles to recover and re-enter growth cycles, undoing progress. Consistency is everything.
Reason 3: Hormonal Influences Are Not Being Addressed
Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid imbalances, and hormonal contraceptive use can all stimulate ongoing hair growth — sometimes faster than laser can eliminate it. This doesn't mean laser won't work, but it does mean results may take longer, and maintenance sessions may be necessary. If you suspect a hormonal factor, discuss it openly at your consultation.
Reason 4: Inadequate Energy Settings
Laser treatments require sufficient energy to effectively disable hair follicles. Clinics that prioritise client comfort over clinical efficacy often use settings too low to achieve permanent results. The treatment should be perceptible. If you've had sessions that felt like virtually nothing, that may be your answer.
Reason 5: Sun Exposure Between Sessions
Tanned or sun-exposed skin before a laser session forces the practitioner to reduce the energy settings to avoid damage — directly compromising the result. This is another reason winter is such an ideal time for laser hair removal: lower UV exposure means we can safely treat at optimal settings throughout your course.
What to Do
If your results have been disappointing, don't give up on laser hair removal — give it the conditions it needs to succeed. Book a proper assessment, be honest about your history, commit to the full course, and protect your skin from the sun between sessions. Done correctly, laser hair removal genuinely changes lives.
